Birding-Aus blog is the place to discuss anything about Birding-Aus (the Aussie wild bird mailing list), about Australian birds, or anything at all to do with birding.
I'm with anonymous (I think it must be Night Parrot. I don't think there's anything wrong with the list as it is. The spam isn't too bad, and you're never going to get it to zero.

Well Birding Aus is the only list through which I receive spam. I am subscribed to several other (Neo-orn, birdingperu, OB, MexicoBirding) and never receive any spam as their filters are obviously better.
Well, I'm on several Yahoo groups, and last year there was quite a bit of spam hitting one or two of them. The options to have separate emails, daily digest, or just read the archive, are good. However, in the long run you're the man Russell, run it the way that suits you best.
I see no need to move the list, especially now that it has become members only. I believe this will largely solve the spam issue.
Moving to Yahoo would make the problem worse - advertising effectively makes every message spam. COG-L used to have advertising when they were hosted by Topica.com, and it was incredibly annoying!
My workplace even blocks access via the web to Yahoo Groups which means that I would only be able to access birding-aus at home. The advantage of accessing it at work is the immediacy of the information. So, being selfish, I would say not to move.
I can tell, I always look into the archive, and it was of great help for me, in the previous trip 2002, and now a month ahead 1 sept tot 2 december I use the archive till the last. Thanks Russell it is splendid and you are doing a good job!
Hi! I'm Russell, and I started the Birding-Aus mailing list back in 1995 because I was fed up with never being able to read anything about Australian birds on the Net. I think Birding-Aus has rectified that a little! Best of all, Birding-Aus has helped birders from around the world connect with one another.

I agree with Wilyum Stent,
But what about us lot that are victimized by those running cutting edge IT systems.
How can a pensioner surviving on nothing more then the pension constantly afford to upgrade puta equipment?

The list is great as it is. I don't get any spam on it. I receive it through Hotmail maybe that's why.
